Midweek excursion (included in the registration fee)

Midweek excursion: Flysch and Gaztelugatxe

A Bio-Geo field trip to the flysch and cliffs of the Basque coast will be organized in the afternoon of Wednesday 8 June for the symposium attendees and accompanying people (excursion included in the registration fee).

This tour will take us from Bakio beach along the coast to one of the most emblematic and touristic places in the Basque Country: the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a protected biotope and recording site of the famous Game of Thrones series. Along the way we will enjoy impressive views of coves and cliffs. On the way back we will go through the interior, between trees and farmhouses, arriving in Bakio after passing through San Pelaio.

DEPARTURE PLACE AND HOUR: Venue (Bizkaia Aretoa UPV/EHU) – 15:00.
SCHEDULE: 15:30 – 19:30 (4 hours).
EQUIPMENT TO BRING: Sports clothing and shoes suitable for the weather, raincoat, backpack, water bottle.
PERSONAL CAPABILITIES: Fit for hiking (241 stairs).

Optional tours

We offer symposium attendees and/or accompanying persons 3 different tour options to complete their experience (prices are not included in the registration fee). Please note that there are limited places available for each optional tour and that it may not take place if the number of people registered does not reach a minimum of 15 people.

In- & post-symposium one-day tour: Bilbao + Boat trip to Bridge of Bizkaia

A one-day optional guided tour of Bilbao + Boat trip to Bridge of Bizkaia will be offered on the 6th of June (Monday) for accompanying people and on the 11th of June (Saturday) for symposium attendees and their accompanying people.

Bilbao has countless treasures in its streets, and we will try to see some of them through a guided tour while walking in The Old Quarter and the Ensanche area. Afterwards we will have a boat trip from Bilbao to visit the Bizkaia Bridge in Getxo. The Bridge of Bizkaia was declared a heritage monument by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, is more than 125 years old. Designed by the architect, Alberto Palacio, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, it was opened in 1893.

The price* will include: Guided tour of Bilbao + lunch in Bilbao** + guided boat trip + bus from Getxo to Bilbao.

In- & post-symposium one-day tour for La Rioja

An optional one-day tour to La Rioja will be offered on 7 June (Tuesday) for accompanying people and on the 11th of June (Saturday) for symposium attendees and their accompanying people.

La Rioja deserves to be visited for its excellent wines and for its historical heritage. Located at the southern end of the territory, and linked to the Ebro River, it offers different landscapes, of walled towns and cellars, where such precious wine is produced. La Rioja has become a world-renowned tourist destination. In addition to wineries, it offers numerous attractions that the region surprises its visitors with, such as landscapes of endless vineyards, medieval villages and a traditional gastronomy that leaves no one indifferent.

The price (149€) will include: Round trip bus + guided tour + visit to winery + visit to Santa María de los Reyes (church) +
lunch (Rioja typical menu).

Post-symposium one-day tour: San Sebastián + Chillida Leku

We offer an optional post-conference excursion on 11 June (Saturday) for symposium attendees and their accompanying people. It will be a one-day trip to San Sebastián (one of the three Basque capitals) that will include a visit to San Telmo and Chillida Leku Museums.

We will begin our visit of Donostia – San Sebastian at the Monte Igueldo which we will access by road, in order to delight ourselves with a spectacular view of the city (Santa Clara, Monte Ulía and Bay of La Concha). Then we reach the heart of the city – the old town, which corresponds to the original city, and which is located between the port, the River Urumea and the Urgull mount. We will also visit the Bretxa market, with its fish market, and its recently overhauled Plaza de la Constitución. Moreover, we will visit the San Telmo Museum and Chillida Leku Museum.

The price (166€) will include: round trip bus + guided tour + visit to San Telmo Museum + Chillida Leku Museum + lunch in San Sebastián
